condominiums
There are endless hardwood flooring options available for your condominium. If you have a concrete subfloor you will likely need an engineered floor (click here for examples). You will need to decide whether you want a floor that is directly glued down to the concrete or one that is floated over an underlay.
Glue down floors are more expensive due to extra installation time and the special adhesive used to ensure a long lasting bond to the subfloor. The benefits are a firmer feeling floor underfoot and less noise reflected back into your suite.
Floating floors are less expensive because they are easier to install. The floating floor system is more effective at preventing noise transference to suites below. Most strata council rules will require a floating hardwood floor be installed for this reason.
Concrete leveling is often needed to get a new or old condominium subfloor ready to receive hardwood flooring. Carpet tends to hide subfloor imperfections where as hardwood hi-lites them. Click on 'concrete leveling' to learn more.

sound barriers
Floor underlays act as sound barriers. How much an underlay reduces noise is determined by the Impact Isolation Class (IIC) and Sound Transmission Class (STC) it is given.
For example, one of our underlays comes with an ICC rating of 71 and an STC rating of 68 which exceeds most strata council requirements.
IIC refers to noise transferred to the suite below you.
STC refers to the noise reflected back into your suite. (eg: your own footsteps)
